Heraclitus saw something profound in a river. Its waters never stop moving, yet the river remains recognizable.

That distinction matters more than it first appears. Change does not automatically mean loss of identity. Sometimes the very processes that keep us alive require us to change.

In the second half of life, we can become imprisoned by comparison: the strength we once had, the certainty we remember, the roles we used to occupy. But memory is selective. And recovering what was lost is not always the same as building what comes next.

A man can honor his past without asking his future to reproduce it. His responsibilities may change. His capabilities may change. His character is still expressed in what he chooses to do with the life in front of him.

The current will continue. The question is how we meet it.

Physique Reborn. Your best chapters are still being written.

Historical note: “You cannot step into the same river twice” is a familiar later formulation of Heraclitus’s river image, not an authenticated verbatim quotation from a surviving book.
